This one had been rumored since April. Sony's global price hike left India out of the initial announcement, which meant three months of leaks, WhatsApp screenshots from retailers, and analyst guesses before anything official showed up. As of this week, it's no longer a rumor.

How we got from "maybe" to confirmed

The standard PS5 is now listed at ₹69,990 on ShopAtSC, Sony's own authorised retail store in India, which is about as confirmed as this gets without a formal press release. Sony hasn't published a dedicated India announcement, the price simply went live, matching what leakers had been describing for weeks.

What that actually means in rupees

The PS5 launched in India at ₹49,990 for the Digital Edition and ₹54,990 for the disc version back in 2020. A standard disc console now at ₹69,990 works out to roughly a 40% increase over launch pricing, and that's before accounting for a second, smaller revision that had already added around ₹5,000 earlier this year. This isn't a single sharp jump, it's the cumulative result of at least two separate hikes landing on Indian buyers within the same year.

Same story as everywhere else, just delayed

None of this is India-specific in cause. The global shortage in DRAM and NAND memory, driven largely by AI data center demand, already pushed US, Japanese, and European prices up in April. India historically lags a global Sony price change by weeks or months rather than getting hit on the same day, and that's exactly what played out here. The underlying cause hasn't changed, memory is expensive everywhere, India just felt it later.

What this changes if you're deciding whether to buy

The console itself isn't the part you can still negotiate with. Sony's own filings rule out a future price cut, and there's no realistic scenario where the PS5 gets cheaper before PS6 arrives, which is itself reportedly pushed out to 2028-2029 for the same memory shortage reasons. If you're set on getting a PS5, waiting for a better hardware price isn't a strategy that's paid off at any point in 2026.

What's still fully in your control is what you pay for the games once you own the console. At ₹69,990 just to get in the door, tracking every discount on the software side stops being a nice-to-have and starts being the only lever left.
