Not every PS5 game goes on sale, and not every game that does is worth buying even at a discount. This is the pattern that showed up once PSNDeal had enough price history to actually see it, rather than guess at it.
How fast, and how far, prices actually move
Three groups behave completely differently, and mixing them up is the easiest way to overpay:
God of War, Spider-Man, Horizon, Gran Turismo
Ubisoft, EA, Square Enix
Destiny 2, Fortnite, EA Sports FC, NBA 2K
Games that go on sale regularly
Sony's first-party titles reliably hit 50–70% off within 12–18 months of launch, but almost always during a named event, Days of Play, Black Friday, the Mid-Year Sale. Outside those windows they barely move.
Third-party publishers move faster and don't wait for permission. Ubisoft, EA, and Square Enix titles frequently hit 60–75% off within 6–9 months of release, most of it happening outside the big flagship sales entirely.
Games rarely worth full price on day one
Live-service games are free to play from the start, so there's no discount to wait for, just a download. Annual sports titles are the opposite trap: they drop in price the moment the next year's entry is announced, usually inside six months of launch. Both are close to never worth buying at launch price.
Games almost never on sale
Nintendo's pricing doesn't apply here, but even within Sony's own ecosystem, some indie darlings and smaller publishers barely discount at all. Niche JRPGs from smaller studios in particular tend to hold their launch price for years rather than months.
